Cotton Pickin' Plant

Every year I try to grow something different and this year I tried indigo and cotton. The indigo seedlings didn't make it, but I did get a cotton plant. I later found out that they don't like to be transplanted and that's probably why I only got one.

The plant itself is pretty, and (surprise) it likes this heat. But the flowers were the real surprise:

On this one plant there were white, pink, and lavender flowers. But they just bloomed one at a time and I only got this one picture.

Then after a while this seed pod formed, which when ripe will burst open into a cotton boll. But it takes about 8 weeks after flowering to form and I don't think we will get many before a frost.

I will definitely show pictures of the fluffy cotton boll. I read online how to make it into thread. How fun would that be?

Hey Cindy!!! Here in Alabama you should see the fields that are planted in cotton. When in bloom they are beautiful.. We don't see as many cotton fields as there used to be.. I guess importing Cotton has taken over... We mostly have soybeans now where Cotton used to be. My mom uses the cotton plants in her Fall Hay Bale display in her yard with the pumpkins and corn stalks.. Watch out for that pesty Boll Weevil Bug!! lol
There is a statue in the Black Belt of Bama dedicated to this bug.. lol

Very interesting plant, I imagine it would with stand the heat. It must be beautiful to see a field full of cotton when flowered. I'd love to see what your looks like when the pod opens.
Hugs Rosemary...xx

Living with a cotton field in the back of our property.......yes, there are pretty blooms......except for this year. No cotton due to drought. The blooms on this cotton is usually light yellow with a purple strand going through the petals. You could have yourself a good little patch in not time, and turn into a cotton farmer before you know it! LOL. Have a good week! blessings,Kathleen

What a neat thing to grow! Every year I try something different too. I'll put that on my list for next year!

It is a very pretty plant! We drove up into the higher elevations yesterday and saw tobacco plants...they are pretty, too! We saw big fields of corn, too! Everything's nice and lush here this year! ♥

hi cindy, I wish I had a green thumb! Your gardens are so spectacular! I can barely keep my hanging baskets alive.. HOnestly! Im horrible about keeping them watered. I seriously need a fairly garden mother! Maybe you'd like the job!? lol!
seriously though, we have a huge yard and lots of space for pretty gardens, but I've not a clue!
so, I guess I shall enjoy looking at yours, and shop at the hundreds of little farm stands that are all over the place out here. maybe someday I'll plant a little veggie garden and see what happens to it!
have a great week!
xoxo
